I could live with a lighthouse keeper
He’d be a loner just the same as me
His heart would be elusive as the mist upon the headland
And his kiss would be as deep as the sea

Sometimes late at night he’d play the concertina
And he’d hold me like a harbour as the storm raged on the sea
He’d tell me I was beautiful as if he really meant it
And just maybe there’d be that in me that only he could see

But why must I crave this solitary ever after
Nothing but a lighthouse its keeper and me
With our backs to the world and our gaze towards the sunset
And nothing else for miles but the sea

I’d marry him in silence one cold bright winter’s morning
With seagulls as bridesmaids and fishing nets for a veil
As the last of the sun disappeared into the ocean
He’d remove the dress I’d sewn from an old sail

And if I were to leave the tide would steal across the causeway
My boat would turn around at the sound of his voice
His face would come forever between me and the horizon
And I’d stay for there would be no other choice
